ECONOMIC FIGURES
According to the State Statistic Committee, in January to October 2009, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Azerbaijan increased by 8.3% in comparison with last year figures for the same period and made up $33.25bln. The specific weight of the construction sector in the GDP made up 8.2%.
Nearly $6.5bln.from all financial sources was invested in the economy of Azerbaijan from January to September 2009. Foreign investments shared 17.6% and amounted to $1.02bln.
In January to September 2009 the foreign trade turnover with 132 countries comprised $16517.61mln. The amount of export comprised $11560.98mln, while import totaled $4956.63mln.
According to a report by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Azerbaijan’s economy is expected to grow by 7.1 percent in 2010.
HEALTHCARE SPHERE
The global financial crisis has had less impact on Azerbaijan than many of its neighbouring countries. The country’s overall development is influencing the heathcare sector as well. Myriad hospitals and medical centers are being built throughout the republic. Thanks to the growing investments in the medical sector, over 300 health clinics have been rebuilt and refitted over the last five years. A new Ophthalmology SRI complex and National Oncology Center surgical building opened this year. Short-term plans include opening a Republican Urology Hospital and annexing the Renal Transplantation Center, both of which are currently under construction.
The President’s Reserve Fund of Azerbaijan granted around 20 million manat ($25 million) in two years to provide the country with state-of-the-art ambulances.
More than 100 Health Ministry-approved drugs are manufactured in Azerbaijan today. State programmes in the Republic seek to attract investments in pharmaceutical factories. In the future, the government will provide the necessary conditions to companies interested in working in the sector.
